The Malealea Development Trust promotes the empowerment of local people, believing that people are best helped if they help themselves. For this reason, community members are encouraged to initiate entrepreneurial projects enable them to generate their own income in a sustained manner. In this way, people can strengthen their capacity, promote independence and foster local economic growth. The Trust provides support and assistance for this as required.

The following are examples of micro development projects that have been initiated by community members:

  • Handicraft Centre (for youth and adults)
  • Sewing projects
  • Candle making projects
  • Agricultural and food production projects
  • Tree harvesting projects
  • Mill (milling service for local people to mill their maize)
  • Welding station
  • Public phone centre
